Gaia admits: they make a lot of cash.
As stated by Fred Kelson, there is no actual way to know how much cash Gaia Online makes because it tries to hide all of its financial data. In other words, because they are not a company, they can easily hide all their income to the large public and thus continue to say that they need donations for server upcosts.
Well, for the first time, Gaia Online has admitted they were making a lot of money.
From http://www.answers.com/topic/gaia-online : ”It should be noted that the items for November 2006 barely payed for server costs.”
Oh really? How nice! A few things should be noted:
1)As stated by Mr. Kelson, aside from server upcosts, Gaia has virtually no other costs. It does not offer technical support nor does it upgrade a lot (aside from monthly collectibles).
2)This does not count advertising, the gold they sell, the ad placement they sell and the store which is responsible for over 60% of their income.
3)This was a data from November 2006; we can safely assume these income have grown up a bit.
You can also note that Fred Kelson’s estimation was indeed correct as both results, the one he estimated and the one given by answers.com, are very close to each other.
Where do I want to come? Well they said that monthly collectibles paid for server costs, thus meaning that all money from advertising, gold and real shop go into their pockets. Nice job, assholes!

I am generally disgusted at how GaiaOnline treats its users. Derek Liu has probably made more kids unhappy, broken more dreams than every other person I know.
And you? Were you banned on Gaia? Discuss!

And for the extra money issue that was brought up, I hope you realize that they have to pay for the people working on the sight as well. No one works on a website like that without wanting it to be their job, because honestly they can’t even work elsewhere.
And do you know this Kelson guy? How reliable is he?
Or is as biased as you?

The fact of the matter is they’re caring too much about money and making it seem like that’s all they care about. Individual members don’t matter; I mean, maybe they’re banning people so they don’t have to spend as much money on maintaining their bandwidth o.O Think about it, you ban someone, do you think most of those people are going to want to go back again? But then if they cared that much I guess they’d say no more mule accounts.
I dunno. Any site that starts offering virtual stuff to you for actual money always turns me off.
